The Home Office reported that 12 arrests were made by immigration enforcement during raids on neighboring factories. The individuals apprehended, consisting of 11 men and one woman who are all Indian nationals, are suspected of various immigration offenses such as illegal working and violating visa conditions. These raids were conducted in response to intelligence indicating illegal working activities in Tipton, West Midlands.
The factories targeted included one producing bedding and another producing cakes. Following the arrests, four of the individuals are being held pending potential removal from the UK, while the remaining eight have been released on bail under certain conditions, as stated by the Home Office.
Michael Tomlinson, the Minister for countering illegal migration, emphasized the consequences for businesses that employ illegal workers without conducting proper checks. He highlighted this operation as part of the increased immigration enforcement efforts nationwide.
In February, government officials announced a threefold increase in fines for employers who hire illegal migrants. The fines for a first violation have risen from £15,000 to £45,000 per illegal worker, and repeated violations within three years can result in fines of £60,000 for businesses.
