The UK has clarified that only international students pursuing a PhD are allowed to bring their dependents to the country.
Dr. Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, explained in an interview that this policy change, implemented earlier this year, aims to address the rising number of foreign students bringing dependents.
The surge in dependents was straining universities, affecting accommodation, access to healthcare, and schooling.
However, students undertaking long-term research degrees like PhDs are exempt from these restrictions.
Montgomery highlighted the substantial increase in demand for British education, especially from countries like Nigeria and India, which necessitated these measures. He mentioned that while it's too early to gauge the impact on undergraduates, the policy's effects will become clearer by September 2024.
Despite these changes, the UK remains a highly sought-after destination for quality higher education, with a significant increase in study visa applications in recent years.
